There are a large number of products on the market for filling wrinkles and skin defects. There is certainly no single product which is “best” for every condition in every person. Restylane and Perlane are clear gel products made of hyaluronic acid, an acid which occurs naturally in the skin. Restylane works to fill skin wrinkles and defects by attracting water to the immediate area, producing long-lasting filling effects, up to 6 to 9 months. CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast are the newest products in a line of injectable human-derived skin fillers. CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast are used in many areas, but are preferred for finer areas, such as lip outlines and mild wrinkles. These products produce a beautiful immediate effect, especially in these fine areas; retreatment every 3 to 6 months is required to maintain cosmetic correction. Dr. Engelhard likes to use CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast as the “finishing touch” for many cosmetic enharncements, as these products flow through the smallest needles and produce an immediate result with very little swelling or “down time”. Fascian is composed of particles of human tendon tissue, and is available in various particle sizes for greater flexibility of cosmetic uses.vFascian is appropriate for larger skin defects, and, like Cymetra, has both immediate filling effects as well as some extent of tissue ingrowth for a mild long term effect. Radiesse, previously know as Radiance FN, is a unique product made of tiny calcium beads suspended in a resorbable gel. As the gel is absorbed by the skin, new collagen fibers are grown through the calcium beads, lending fullness to the area injected, Radiesse treatments last in the range of 5 years, and are best suited for moderate folds, some deeper wrinkles, and lip outlines.
